Politico: These rules could be on DeVos’ radar for religious schools

THESE RULES COULD BE ON DEVOS’ RADAR FOR RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS: Among the next set of federal education regulations in the Trump administration’s crosshairs are rules aimed at religious colleges that administration officials say “unnecessarily restrict participation by religious entities” in federal higher education and student aid programs. The administration hasn’t said what rules it will target under the plan, which was first reported by Morning Education, but here are a handful likely to get a look:

— Grant programs: Regulations require a private organization that engages in “inherently religious activities, such as religious worship, instruction, or proselytization,” to separate those services “in time or location” from any programs or services supported by grants from the Education Department. Rules also specify that participation in any religious activities by students in programs supported by the grant must be “voluntary.” There are also additional rules for specific grant programs, including GEAR UP, which is meant to boost college awareness and readiness among low-income students. That program is limited to organizations that provide “secular, neutral, and non-ideological services or benefits.”
