Lawsuit takes aim at University of Michigan over free speech

ANN ARBOR, MI – A nonprofit group has filed a lawsuit against the University of Michigan, alleging that its disciplinary codes prohibiting harassment and bullying “capture staggering amounts of protected speech and expression.”

Speech First, a Washington D.C.-based group claiming to combat restrictions on free speech and other civil rights at colleges and universities, filed its lawsuit Tuesday, May 8, in the U.S. District Court’s Eastern District against UM.

The lawsuit alleges more than 150 reports of alleged “expressions of bias,” through posters, fliers, social media, whiteboards, verbal comments and classroom behavior have been investigated by the university’s Bias Response Team since April 2017.
